About This Sketch

‘Injured in Fear’ is one of Scott’s earlier attempts to apply his research of the Kaiju design principles to an animal figure. . The resulting sketch is an interesting and rather abstract design which well represents the ‘strange beast’ title and gives us a hint at what fear might look like if it were manifest as a literal monster. This is a sketch using drawing pencils, harsh lines and shading on cartridge paper; unlike most of Scott’s earlier work this design incorporates colour and it is striking and vivid like the harsh shading and darkness Scott uses most frequently in designs like this.

What is ‘Kaiju’?

Kaiju‘ literally means ‘strange creature’, but often in English the word that is most often used to translate the term Kaiju is ‘Monster’. This can be attributed to the fact that traditional Kaiju would often be represented as inherently destructive beings.

Kaiju films usually showcase monsters of any form attacking a major Japanese city or engaging another (or multiple) monsters in battle.

Scott’s creatures though strange and in some ways monstrous are not intended to be seen as destructive in the same way that their inspirations are.

    1. I thought the same thing when I saw this one for the first time. Lots of emotion in this one, and what an interesting use of colour in the days when Scott was doing mostly black and white sketches. DSC
