About This Sketch

The Gonocro is a solitary creature, it lives in the mountains and prefers caves and caverns far from any other creatures. It can survive for long periods of time in the most arid, artic conditions. It hunts for food by waiting silently, blending into the rocks to which is is perfectly adapted to climb with ease. When other creatures are foolish enough to venture through it’s territory it leaps from above taking them by surprise.

Despite it’s vast strength, and hunting prowess, the Gonocro is not a violent beast, it is usually quiet and docile, a pensive and protective creature. It is more likely to hunt other hunters than it is to hurt prey animals, it doesn’t like hurting things that cannot fight back honourably.

The original image of Gonocro was hand-drawn using coloured pencil on cartridge paper.

The featured image of Gonocro was edited by DS Coremans using Photoshop. The initial image was enhanced by overdrawing with a digital render in a way that still allows all of Scott’s original design to be seen, but allows the character to feel more finished and fleshed out in it’s design. The backgrounds are digitally generated using prompts created by Scott, to help visualise the character in a setting that seems more suited to that character.

This hybrid work between Scott and Darren is something they have been working on together since early 2025, so that both of them can learn new skills, but also so that Scott can get a better sense of how these characters could be developed as he continues to work on his skills as an animator.

Key inspirations for Scott at the moment are from some of his favourite animated movies. These stills have been taken from the three animation design styles Scott is most interested in developing: Hand Drawn, Stop-Motion, and Digital Designs.
