Oclra

About This Sketch
The Oclra (pronounced Oak-lye-ra) is a creature that Scott designed in late 2025. The Oclra is vicious creature which is always hungry. It can use it’s four legs to run at incredible speeds across almost any terrain. It is an adept hunter and it very rarely tires of the hunt once it begins. At the end of each arm is a long spike which it uses to pierce it’s prey, and the sharp claws around the creatures wrist are more like mandibles than fingers.
Most Oclra are lone creatures, and will defend their vast territory against all manner of creatures. Although it can live in all terrains, it’s preferred habitat is usually within the tree line, close to a body of water like a pond or spring. It drinks by submerging it’s body within the water, filling an internal stomach with water which it can carry for weeks at a time when hunting in more arid plains.

The original image of Oclra was hand-drawn using coloured pencil on cartridge paper.
The featured image of Oclra was edited by DS Coremans using Photoshop. The initial image was enhanced by overdrawing with a digital render in a way that still allows all of Scott’s original design to be seen, but allows the character to feel more finished and fleshed out in it’s design. The backgrounds are digitally generated using prompts created by Scott, to help visualise the character in a setting that seems more suited to that character.
This hybrid work between Scott and Darren is something they have been working on together since early 2025, so that both of them can learn new skills, but also so that Scott can get a better sense of how these characters could be developed as he continues to work on his skills as an animator.
Key inspirations for Scott at the moment are from some of his favourite animated movies. These stills have been taken from the three animation design styles Scott is most interested in developing: Hand Drawn, Stop-Motion, and Digital Designs.
