About This Sketch

The Conemagin (pronounced cone-ma-gene) is a creature that Scott designed in late 2025. The Conemagin is an aquatic animal which lives entirely underwater. It is similar to a gastropod, and is very intelligent, agile, and is able to manipulate objects and use them as tools. Like an Octopus on earth, the Conemagin is a skilled underwater hunter, it can be fierce, but is more likely to drift on the current snaring passing aquatic life as it drifts by.

The Conemagin very rarely surfaces from the depths of the ocean, but on occasion they can be seen floating on the surface of the water, their jewel like eyes catch the sun and can often look like treasure floating in the water, but don’t go near them, as they would use their long and adaptive tentacles to ensnare anything foolish enough to get too close, dragging their prey back down into the depths of the ocean.

The original image of Conemagin was hand-drawn using coloured pencil on cartridge paper.

The featured image of Conemagin was edited by DS Coremans using Photoshop. The initial image was enhanced by overdrawing with a digital render in a way that still allows all of Scott’s original design to be seen, but allows the character to feel more finished and fleshed out in it’s design. The backgrounds are digitally generated using prompts created by Scott, to help visualise the character in a setting that seems more suited to that character.

This hybrid work between Scott and Darren is something they have been working on together since early 2025, so that both of them can learn new skills, but also so that Scott can get a better sense of how these characters could be developed as he continues to work on his skills as an animator.

Key inspirations for Scott at the moment are from some of his favourite animated movies. These stills have been taken from the three animation design styles Scott is most interested in developing: Hand Drawn, Stop-Motion, and Digital Designs.
