About This Sketch

‘Bistorot the Hucmateer’ is a creature that Scott designed in late 2024 when he began to think about what a character might look like if it was clothed. The jumpsuit design is supposed to be a religious shroud, topped off with a ceremonial head-piece. The Hucmateer is a religious position, though not a patient or calm creature. Bistorot is a loud and forceful creature, whose position is that all other creatures should do as the Hucmateer decrees.

The Hucmateer’s race is intended to be sentient, and almost ape like in its appearance and movements, but it is also alienesque in the same way that many of Scott’s Kaiju inspired creatures tend to be.

The Hucmateer does not preach from a church or a rural area, instead it trawls the desert from settlement to settlement looking for others to convert and for resources to demand.

The original image of The Hucmateer was hand-drawn using coloured pencil on cartridge paper.

The featured image of The Hucmateer was edited by DS Coremans using Photoshop. The initial image was enhanced by overdrawing with a digital render in a way that still allows all of Scott’s original design to be seen, but allows the character to feel more finished and fleshed out in it’s design. The backgrounds are digitally generated using prompts created by Scott, to help visualise the character in a setting that seems more suited to that character.

This hybrid work between Scott and Darren is something they have been working on together since early 2025, so that both of them can learn new skills, but also so that Scott can get a better sense of how these characters could be developed as he continues to work on his skills as an animator.

Key inspirations for Scott at the moment are from some of his favourite animated movies. These stills have been taken from the three animation design styles Scott is most interested in developing: Hand Drawn, Stop-Motion, and Digital Designs.
