Map of Genes
About This Sketch
‘Map of Genes’ is a slight deviation from the usual work Scott creates for the ‘IALFEC‘ universe. Scott has been hard at work this year considering the terrain and the locations of his upcoming animated series. The planet of Genes is the home of the ‘Yuzzik‘ the dominant species on the planet. Scott has been designing variants of the Yuzzik for a number of years. They are the creatures and characters he has come back to most often as he has developed his skills as an animator, so it felt right to make his first project a Yuzzik story.
The Map of Genes is Scott’s initial thoughts on how the continents of the planet might be laid out. Each continent has a specific and distinct climate, for instance KKECCMENTAG in the North West of the map the terrain is dry, arid and mountainous, much like some of the landscape in North America. The reason Scott finds this type of information useful as it helps him consider the different types of creatures that might live in these places as each creature needs to be physically adapted to the environment they are from.
Seeing Scott give his work this much consideration is fascinating and the stories he is beginning to tell reflect that level of thought required to develop this immense universe of creations. The IALFEC project has been a long road so far, but the journey has been inspiring.
The original sketch is created using coloured graphite pencil on cartridge paper.
In the initial sketches not much has been done to highlight Scott’s work. Some light colour boosting was required to make the work stand out, but in the featured image the names for each of the continents has also been included digitally to make the names just a little clearer.
This hybrid work between Scott and Darren is something new they have been working on together so that both of them can learn new skills, but also so that Scott can get a better sense of how these characters could be developed as he continues to work on his skills as an animator.
Key inspirations for Scott at the moment are from some of his favourite animated movies. From Dreamworks; the Shrek franchise, from Blue Sky Studios; the Ice Age franchise, and Disney in general, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary as an animation studio.
