About This Sketch
‘Khazdik’ is one of Scott’s earliest attempts to apply his research of the Kaiju design principles to an animal figure. Scott wanted to create a land-based creature that had elements of a water-based design; but the final creature also took inspiration from a study of segmented insects. The resulting sketch is an interesting hybrid design which well represents the ‘strange beast’ title. This is a sketch using drawing pencils, harsh lines and shading on cartridge paper.
What is ‘Kaiju’?
‘Kaiju‘ literally means ‘strange creature’, but often in English the word that is most often used to translate the term Kaiju is ‘Monster’. This can be attributed to the fact that traditional Kaiju would often be represented as inherently destructive beings.
Kaiju films usually showcase monsters of any form attacking a major Japanese city or engaging another (or multiple) monsters in battle.

Scott’s creatures though strange and in some ways monstrous are not intended to be seen as destructive in the same way that their inspirations are.
